19世紀アメリカの神経学者ジョージ・M・ビアードによる、神経衰弱（neurasthenia）の症状、診断、経過、治療を体系的に論じた医学書。本書はThe Classics of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences Libraryの会員向けに制作された1991年刊の特装復刻版。
ビアードは1860年代末から神経衰弱について発表を続け、1880年刊の本作ではその症状、診断、予後、治療を各章に分けて整理した。本作は全5章からなり、序論に続いて症状、性質と診断、予後と経過、治療と衛生を扱う。症状の章では頭痛、睡眠障害、精神的疲労、動悸、消化器症状、各種の恐怖症など広範な徴候を列挙し、診断の章では器質性疾患、貧血、ヒステリー、心気症などとの区別を検討する。治療の章では休養、食事、薬物、電気療法、マッサージなど当時用いられていた治療法を取り上げている。

Beard's treatise examines neurasthenia through its symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, sequences, treatment and hygiene, with discussion of nervous symptoms, differential diagnosis and contemporary therapeutic methods. The volume reproduces the second and revised edition published in New York in 1880 and includes the original preface and the preface to the second edition. This copy is the 1991 special facsimile edition privately printed for members of The Classics of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences Library.
