イギリスの作家ヴァージニア・ウルフによる、作家や作品について論じながら本の読み方を考える評論・随筆集。第一集は1925年、第二集は1932年に初刊された。本セットはUniform Editionの第一集1951年第8刷と第二集1953年第6刷の2冊揃い。
第一集は、自分の楽しみのために本を読む人について述べる「The Common Reader」で始まる。チョーサー、モンテーニュ、デフォー、ジェイン・オースティン、ジョージ・エリオットらを取り上げ、小説や随筆、日記などを読み解いていく。「Modern Fiction」や「The Modern Essay」では、小説や随筆の表現についても論じる。第二集では、ジョン・ダンの詩や『ロビンソン・クルーソー』、ドロシー・オズボーンの書簡、スウィフトの書簡形式の日記などを取り上げる。メアリ・ウルストンクラフトやドロシー・ワーズワスを扱う人物論に続き、ジョージ・メレディスやトマス・ハーディの小説へと進む。最後には「How Should One Read a Book?」を収める。

Two collections of essays by Virginia Woolf, including "Modern Fiction" in the First Series and "How Should One Read a Book?" in the Second Series. Both dust jackets bear the designation Uniform Edition. First Series: eighth impression, 1951; Second Series: sixth impression, 1953.
