前半の「Literary History」では、女性作家をどのように読むかという問題から始まり、「女性文学」という概念、女性雑誌、女性の日記、文学史における女性作家の扱われ方へと論を進める。後半の「Fiction」には、林芙美子の『放浪記』の英訳Diary of a Vagabondと、『水仙』の英訳Narcissusを収録する。巻末には参考文献と索引を収める。

Joan E. Ericson examines Hayashi Fumiko and the development of the category of women's literature in modern Japan, with chapters on women writers, women's journals, diaries, and literary history. Part Two includes English translations of Hayashi Fumiko's Horoki as Diary of a Vagabond and Suisen as Narcissus, followed by Bibliography and Index. First paperback edition, 1997.
