イギリス人聖職者・登山家W・H・マレー・ウォルトンによる、日本各地の山岳と当時Formosaと呼ばれた台湾での登山記録をまとめた山岳紀行書。1934年初版。前見返しに著者からの献呈文と自筆文を残し、タイトルページにも著者署名を備える献呈署名本。
マレー・ウォルトンは1917年に日本へ渡り、1932年にイギリスへ帰国するまで日本アルプス、秩父、台湾などで登山を重ねた。Chapter II-Vでは台湾の山岳を扱い、著者は序文で、これらの章を現地観察に基づいて台湾内陸の山々を詳しく英語で記述する最初の試みだと述べている。日本では御嶽山、乗鞍岳、南アルプス、中央アルプス、北アルプス、秩父、筑波山、日光などを扱い、御嶽山の山岳信仰や秩父の山岳信仰についても章を設けている。日本山岳会会長の小島烏水による序文を収録する。図版26点と本文の日本全図1点に加え巻末にNorthern Japanese AlpsとCentral and Southern Japanese Alpsの大型折込地図2点を備える。巻末には日本の山岳高度に関する付録、日本語の語彙と発音に関する用語集、索引を収録する。

This presentation copy bears an inscription from the author on the front free endpaper together with an additional handwritten note, and is also signed by the author on the title page; it includes a foreword by Usui Kojima, 26 plates, one text map, two folding maps, appendices and an index. First edition, 1934.
