本書は二部構成で、第1部「A Bird's-eye View」では日本の諸宗教、1965年から1990年までの宗教と国家の関係、宗教学をめぐる方法論を扱う。第2部「Studies in Japanese Christianity」では、日本におけるキリスト教と世俗化、死者の記憶、祖先との関係について論じている。
本文前には、日本人名の順序やローマ字表記の方針を説明する「Linguistic Conventions」を収録する。巻末には日本社会・宗教史の年表、参考文献、索引兼用語集を収める。

David Reid examines Japanese religions, religion and state relations, secularization, remembrance of the dead, and the relationship between Japanese Christians and ancestors. The volume is divided into "A Bird's-eye View" and "Studies in Japanese Christianity," followed by a chronology of Japanese social and religious history, a Bibliography, and an Index and Glossary. Published in 1991 as volume 2 of Nanzan Studies in Asian Religions; this copy is the paperback edition.
