マレー・ウォルトンは1917年に日本へ渡り、1932年にイギリスへ帰国するまで日本アルプス、秩父、台湾などで登山を重ねた。日本では御嶽山、乗鞍岳、南アルプス、中央アルプス、北アルプス、秩父、筑波山、日光などを扱い、御嶽山の山岳信仰や秩父の山岳信仰についても章を設けている。日本山岳会会長の小島烏水による序文を収録する。図版26点と日本全図1点に加え、巻末にNorthern Japanese AlpsとCentral and Southern Japanese Alpsの大型折込地図2点を備える。巻末には日本の山岳高度に関する付録、日本語の語彙と発音に関する用語集、索引を収録する。
