本書はJohn Whitney Hallと豊田武が編者を務め、全18章を収録する。室町時代の年代区分と京都を扱う章から始まり、足利幕府の権力構造、守護と地方支配、村落共同体、商業、対外関係へと議論を進める。後半では足利義満と北山文化、水墨画、書院造、連歌、中世の芸能者と文学形成、禅と五山制度、蓮如と真宗の展開を取り上げる。政治制度だけでなく、都市や村落、宗教、文学、美術を含む社会の変化から室町期を考察する構成である。地図、図、表、用語集、寄稿者一覧、索引を収録する。

Edited by John Whitney Hall and Toyoda Takeshi, the volume examines political organization, local authority, commerce, social change, cultural life, and religion, and includes maps, figures, tables, a glossary, and an index.
