本書では八つの主要な印相を中心に、六つの副次的な印相、坐法や姿勢、仏像に付随する象徴的な持物へと対象を広げる。巻頭にはMudra: A Pictorial Indexを置き、線画や図表を用いて印相を視覚的に整理する。26点のハーフトーン図版には日本の仏教彫刻を中心に、インド、中国、朝鮮、東南アジアの作例も含まれ、本文で扱われる印相や姿勢の比較資料となっている。
