本書は宗教の必要がどこから生じるのかを問い、自己と現実の問題からニヒリティと空へと議論を進める。宗教における人格的なものと非人格的なものを検討し、空の立場から時間と歴史を全六章から考察する。巻末には注、用語集、索引を付す。
