本書は1984年4月にSmith CollegeとAmherst Collegeで開かれた『Religion and Nothingness』をめぐるシンポジウムの主要な発表論文と、その後に寄せられた論考を収録する。。西谷本人によるメッセージ「Encounter with Emptiness」、Jan Van Bragtによる『宗教とは何か』の英訳についての論考、Masao Abeによる西洋哲学と神学への問いを冒頭に置き、巻末には寄稿者紹介と索引を付す。
