本書では輪廻と時間、ヴィシュヌのマーヤー、蛇と鳥、蓮、象、聖なる河川、シヴァの姿と舞踏、女神の起源を主題として議論を進められる。神話を物語として紹介するだけでなく、彫刻、寺院建築、石窟、青銅像、写本、絵画に表された形と結びつけて解説している。巻末にはインドを中心に、ネパール、スリランカ、カンボジア、ジャワ、チベット、中国など南アジアと東南アジアの宗教美図版を収録する。

Myths and Symbols in Indian Art and Civilization examines Indian mythology and religious symbolism through Sanskrit sources and visual art, based on the work of Heinrich Zimmer and edited by Joseph Campbell. It is arranged in five sections and includes an index and seventy plates representing works from the Indus Civilization through the nineteenth century. This copy is the 1974 second printing of the first Princeton/Bollingen paperback printing issued in 1972.
