Lama Kazi Dawa-Samdupによる英訳をW. Y. Evans-Wentzが編纂・編集した、死から再生に至る中間状態を扱うチベット仏教文献の英語版。本作は1927年に初めて刊行され、1949年に第2版、1957年に第3版が刊行された。1960年にOxford University Press paperbackとして初めて発行され、本書はその1974年再版となる。
前半にはC. G. Jungによる心理学的解説、Lama Anagarika Govindaによる序論的序文、Sir John Woodroffeによる序文を収める。W. Y. Evans-Wentzによる序論では文献の象徴、死の儀礼、輪廻、宇宙観、写本、翻訳と編集の経緯が説明されている。本文は二書で構成される。第一書「The Chikhai Bardo and the Chonyid Bardo」では死の兆候、意識の転移、死の瞬間に現れる光、死後の幻視を扱う。第二書「The Sidpa Bardo」では中間状態における身体、審判、思考の作用、再生へ向かう過程を収録する。巻末の付録には仏陀と菩薩への祈願、バルドの危険な道から救うための祈り、六つのバルドの根本偈、恐れから守る祈り、奥書を収録する。補遺ではヨーガ、タントリズム、マントラ、師弟関係と灌頂、現実、北方・南方仏教とキリスト教、中世キリスト教の審判を扱う。写真・図版多数収録。

The Tibetan Book of the Dead presents Lama Kazi Dawa-Samdup's English rendering of Tibetan teachings concerning death, the intermediate state, and rebirth, compiled and edited by W. Y. Evans-Wentz. It includes a psychological commentary by C. G. Jung, an introductory foreword by Lama Anagarika Govinda, a foreword by Sir John Woodroffe, appendices, addenda, an index, and illustrations. This copy is the 1974 reprint of the Oxford University Press paperback based on the Third Edition.
