フェルセンはパリでのスキャンダルを経てカプリ島へ移り住んだ人物で、本作はその生涯を素材としながら、彼を取り巻く人間関係とヨーロッパ社会を小説として構成している。
実在の人物を題材にした文学と20世紀初頭のヨーロッパにおける同性愛表象の双方から、ペールフィットの作品世界を知る入口となる一冊である。

Roger Peyrefitte's novel is based on the life of Jacques d'Adelsward-Fersen and includes Nino Cesarini among its central figures, with Capri and early twentieth-century European society forming the setting. Translated from the French by Edward Hyams, with a foreword by Jean Cocteau. American edition, first printing, June 1965.
