明治期の日本で法律や社会制度について著述したJ. E. de Beckerによる、吉原遊廓の歴史、制度、慣習をまとめた研究書。1899年に初版が刊行され、本書は1905年に改訂された第5版を底本とするファクシミリ版として2000年に刊行されたペーパーバック版。
Donald Richieによる本版のための序文から始まる本書は、吉原の成立と移転、妓楼や茶屋の仕組み、遊女の階級、芸者、衣装、髪型、年中行事、帳簿、広告、医療検査などを取り上げる。遊女と客の関係、火災、脱出、心中、墓地にも触れ、吉原を支えた制度と日常生活を細かく記録している。巻末には雇用帳簿、医療検査、病院規則、医療統計、吉原の組合規定、債務の有効性、法的文書、日本語語彙などの資料を収録する。図版も多数収録。

Written by J. E. de Becker, this study records the history, institutions, customs, occupations, dress, medical practices, and everyday organization of the Yoshiwara licensed quarter. It includes maps, illustrations, documentary appendices, and a new foreword by Donald Richie. First ICG Muse edition, published in 2000 as a facsimile of the revised fifth edition of 1905.
