序文によれば約70の日記に言及し、網羅的な収集ではなく選択的な紹介を意図している。冒頭で日記の地域別分類について説明し、独立した章では扱わない日記にも短い考察を加える。スコットランド篇ではウォルター・スコット、少女マージョリー・フレミング、ジェイン・ウェルシュ・カーライルらを取り上げる。アイルランド篇にはジョナサン・スウィフト、ウルフ・トーン、ダニエル・オコンネル、トマス・ムーアらを収める。日記の抜粋に人物や記録の背景についての解説を添え、宗教的な内省、家庭生活、交友、旅行、政治活動に目を向ける。両篇に日記の年代順一覧を置き、巻末には索引を収録する。

Arthur Ponsonby examines Scottish and Irish diaries from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century through extracts and commentary, with an introduction by the author. The contents list chronological lists of Scottish and Irish diaries and an index. Published in 1927, with “First Published in 1927” stated on the title-page verso.
