スコットランド出身の外科医ジェームズ・ブレイドによる、メスメリズムとして知られていた現象を医学的・実験的に検討した催眠研究の著作。本書は1843年初版をファクシミリで再現した1994年刊の特装ファクシミリ版。
ブレイドは動物磁気という外的な力による説明から距離を置き、神経系や身体状態の変化として捉えようとした。本書でブレイドは "hypnotism" などの語を用い、メスメリズムの動物磁気説から距離を置いた。後年には注意や暗示の働きをより重視する心理生理学的な説明へと理論を発展させ、その研究は19世紀後半の催眠研究や精神医学にも影響を与えた。

James Braid's Neurypnology, first published in 1843, examines hypnotic phenomena in relation to animal magnetism through observations, experiments, and clinical cases. It discusses methods of inducing hypnotism, sensory and motor phenomena, natural sleep, dreaming, somnambulism, and medical applications. This 1994 special facsimile edition was reproduced from a copy of the first edition of 1843 in the Francis A. Countway Library, Harvard University.
