ブライトは身体に由来するメランコリーと宗教的な良心の苦悩を区別し、その原因や作用、治療を医学と神学の両面から考察した。近世医学の体液論を背景に、身体の状態が心や知覚に及ぼす作用を論じている。メランコリーが現代の「憂鬱」という概念に整理される以前、心の苦しみが身体・精神・宗教の関係からどのように理解されていたのかを知るための一冊である。
Timothie Bright's A Treatise of Melancholy, first published in 1586, examines melancholy through both medical and religious perspectives, distinguishing bodily melancholy from spiritual affliction of conscience. Bound in genuine leather with specially commissioned endpapers, gilt edges, and a spine stamped in 22-karat gold.
