イギリスの随筆家・批評家であるウィリアム・ハズリットによる、同時代の思想家、詩人、政治家、批評家たちを人物論として描いた評論集。本書はThe World's Classicsで1904年に初めて刊行され、1954年に組版が改められた版をもとにした1970年の再版となる。
ジェレミー・ベンサム、ウィリアム・ゴドウィン、サミュエル・テイラー・コールリッジ、ウォルター・スコット、バイロン、ロバート・サウジー、ウィリアム・ワーズワース、マルサス、ウィリアム・コベット、リー・ハントらを取り上げ、その人物像と思想、文体、社会的立場をハズリット自身の批評的視点から描く。
文学、思想、政治が同じ時代の中でどのような人物によって形づくられていたのかを、ハズリットの文章そのものを通して読むことができる一冊となっている。

William Hazlitt's The Spirit of the Age presents a series of contemporary portraits of writers, thinkers, politicians, and critics including Jeremy Bentham, William Godwin, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Walter Scott, Lord Byron, William Wordsworth, and Thomas Malthus. First published in 1825, it was first issued in The World's Classics in 1904 and reset in 1954. This copy is the 1970 reprint of that reset edition.
