全26章からなり、世襲君主国と新しい君主国の違い、征服した国家の統治、軍隊と傭兵、君主に求められる行動、寛大さと吝嗇、残酷さと慈悲、愛されることと恐れられること、信義、側近や追従者の扱い、運命と人間の行動などを順に論じる。理想的な統治像を示すのではなく、国家と権力が実際にどのように獲得され、維持され、失われるのかを具体的な政治行動から分析している。

Niccolò Machiavelli's political treatise examines the acquisition and maintenance of princely power through twenty-six chapters on forms of government, military forces, political conduct, advisers, reputation, and fortune. Translated by Luigi Ricci and revised by E. R. P. Vincent. This is the 1968 reprint of the revised 1935 World's Classics edition.
