17世紀イングランドの詩人・思想家ジョン・ミルトンによる散文から、宗教、教育、結婚、出版の自由、政治と統治をめぐる主要な文章を選んだ散文選集。Malcolm W. Wallaceが選定・編集し序文を付したもので、The World's Classicsでは1925年に初めて刊行された。本書は1963年再版にあたる。
収録作品の一つである1644年の Areopagitica は、出版物の事前許可制に反対して書かれたミルトンの代表的散文である。教会統治をめぐる初期の論争的文章から、教育論、離婚論、出版の自由、王権、共和政をめぐる政治論までを収録し、詩人として知られるミルトンの散文活動を一巻で読むことができる。Wallaceによる序文に続いて Note on the Text を収録する。

First published in The World's Classics in 1925; this copy is the 1963 reprint.
