スコットランドの著述家ジェイムズ・ボズウェルによる、18世紀イギリスの文人サミュエル・ジョンソンの生涯を記した伝記。原著は1791年刊。本書は1929年に刊行されたThe Globeエディション。
本版はエドモンド・マローン監修の1804年第4版を本文の基礎とし、ボズウェル自身の注を残している。ジョンソンとの会話、書簡、関係者から得た資料を組み合わせ、その生涯を年代順に記す。ジョンソンを中心とした18世紀イギリスの文学者たちの交流を、会話や書簡を通して知ることのできる一冊である。

James Boswell's biography of Samuel Johnson records Johnson's life, conversations, correspondence, and literary circle. Edited with an introduction by Mowbray Morris, this Globe Edition follows the text of the fourth edition of 1804 and preserves Boswell's notes. This copy is the 1929 reprint of the Globe Edition.
