本書は、片倉が1968年から1970年にかけて約20か月にわたりワーディ・ファーティマで行ったフィールドワークをもとにしている。自然環境や歴史的背景を確認したうえで、土地利用、農業、所得、労働、親族関係、婚姻、宗教、教育、住居、日常生活などを具体的に扱う。巻末には付録A・B、用語集、参考文献、索引を収録する。本文には図表、写真と地図を収める。

Based on approximately twenty months of fieldwork conducted in Wadi Fatima in western Saudi Arabia from 1968 to 1970, this study examines the physical setting, economic organization, social structure, kinship, marriage, religion, education, and daily life of Bedouin communities. With a Foreword by J. C. Hurewitz, it includes figures, tables, photographs, a map, Appendices A and B, a Glossary, Bibliography, and Index. Published in 1977 as No. 8 in the Modern Middle East Series.
