エルザ・フォン・フライターク＝ローリングホーフェンは1874年にドイツで生まれ、ベルリンやミュンヘンを経てアメリカへ渡り、ニューヨークを中心に詩、オブジェ、衣服、パフォーマンスを用いた活動を行った。本書はその生涯を幼少期からベルリン、ミュンヘン、ニューヨーク、パリへと追いながら、20世紀初頭の前衛芸術と女性をめぐる社会的環境の中でその活動を考察する。巻頭には詳細な年譜とアーカイブ情報を収め、巻末には注、参考文献、索引を付す。カラーも含む図版も多数収録。

Irene Gammel's cultural biography examines the life and work of Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven in relation to Dada, gender, performance, and early twentieth-century modernity. Its fourteen chapters follow the Baroness through Germany, New York, and Paris, with sections on New York Dada, The Little Review, William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound, and Djuna Barnes; the volume also includes a chronology, archival information, Notes, Bibliography, Index, and numerous illustrations. First MIT Press paperback edition, 2003.
