英語の成立から20世紀末までの歴史を、各時代の専門研究者による論考から検討した『The Cambridge History of the English Language』全6巻のうち、年代順に構成された第1巻から第4巻。
第1巻(1994年刊行リプリント)は1066年までを対象とし、英語とゲルマン諸語・印欧語族との関係、音韻と形態、統語、意味と語彙、古英語方言、固有名詞研究、文学言語を扱う。古英語詩を伝えるExeter Bookのファクシミリを口絵に収録し、巻末には言語学用語集、参考文献、索引を備える。
第2巻(初版)は1066年から1476年までの中英語を扱う。音韻と形態、中英語方言、統語、語彙と意味、文学言語、固有名詞研究を中心に、ノルマン征服後の英語の変化やフランス語・ラテン語との関係を考察する。
第3巻(初版)は1476年から1776年までを対象とする。正書法と句読法、音韻と形態、統語、初期近代英語の語彙と意味、地域的・社会的変異、文学言語を収録する。カクストンによる印刷導入期からアメリカ独立宣言の時代までを範囲とし、中英語から初期近代英語へ移行する過程を複数の言語学的領域から検討する。
第4巻(初版)は1776年から1997年までを対象とする。語彙、統語、固有名詞研究、音韻、英文法と語法、文学言語を取り上げ、近代以降の英語の変化と地域的な広がりを扱う。

The first four chronological volumes of the six-volume Cambridge History of the English Language, covering the history of English from its beginnings to 1997. Edited respectively by Richard M. Hogg, Norman Blake, Roger Lass and Suzanne Romaine, the volumes examine phonology, morphology, syntax, vocabulary, dialects, onomastics, literary language and related fields across successive historical periods. Volume I is a 1994 reprint of the 1992 first edition; Volume II is the 1992 first edition; Volume III is the 1999 first edition; Volume IV is the 1998 first edition.
