本書を構成する文章の中心は1930年代に書かれており、バークは文学作品を言葉、象徴、行為、状況の関係から考察する。作品を独立した形式として扱うだけでなく、言語が特定の状況の中でどのように働くのかを文学批評の問題として論じている。付録にはGeorge Herbert Meadを扱った文章などを収め、巻末には人名索引と主題索引を付す。

Kenneth Burke examines literary form through the concept of linguistic, symbolic, and literary action, with essays including "Semantic and Poetic Meaning," "The Rhetoric of Hitler's 'Battle'," "Freud and the Analysis of Poetry," and "Literature as Equipment for Living." The volume is arranged in sections of longer articles, shorter articles, and an appendix, followed by indexes of proper names and topics. Third edition, revised, 1973.
