ビアーズは患者として経験した入院生活や拘束、施設職員との関係、病状の変化、回復に至る過程を自身の言葉で記している。精神科医療を外部から論じるのではなく、施設で治療を受けた当事者自身の経験を記録したことが本書の大きな特徴となっている。巻末には付録を収録する。小冊子〔Notes from the Editors〕を付属する。

Clifford Whittingham Beers recounts his experiences of mental illness, psychiatric hospitalization, institutional treatment, and recovery in this autobiography, with an Introduction incorporating letters from William James dated 1906 and 1907. The text is arranged in four parts comprising thirty-nine chapters, followed by Appendices.
This 1996 special edition was privately printed for members of The Classics of Medicine Library and was prepared from the first edition of 1908. Bound in genuine leather with gilded edges and 22-karat gold spine stamping. Accompanied by "Notes from the Editors" .
