本書は人間の行動を科学の対象として扱う可能性から始まり、オペラント行動、強化と維持、弁別、環境による統制、情動、罰、自己統制、思考などを順に論じている。後半では対象を集団へ広げ、社会行動、政府と法、宗教、心理療法、経済的統制、教育、文化と統制を取り上げる。巻末には索引を収録する。

B. F. Skinner examines human behavior through topics including operant behavior, reinforcement, environmental control, emotion, punishment, self-control, thinking, social behavior, government and law, religion, psychotherapy, education, and culture. The work is arranged in six sections comprising twenty-nine chapters and concludes with an Index.
This 1992 special edition was privately printed for members of The Classics of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences Library and was prepared from the first edition of 1953 by special arrangement with the B. F. Skinner Foundation. Bound in genuine leather with gilded edges, specially commissioned endpapers, and 22-karat gold spine stamping.
