本書ではBethlem Hospitalでの臨床経験をもとに、精神疾患の定義や症状、具体的な症例、死後の解剖所見、治療について記している。

John Haslam records definitions and symptoms of insanity, clinical cases, post-mortem appearances, causes, management, and methods of treatment based on his experience at Bethlem Hospital. The 1809 text is the considerably enlarged second edition of his 1798 Observations on Insanity.
This 1992 special edition was privately printed for members of The Classics of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences Library and was prepared from the second edition of 1809 held by the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine. Bound in genuine leather with gilded edges, specially commissioned endpapers, and 22-karat gold spine stamping.
