日本の歴史学者・人類学者である西村眞次による、古代日本の舟艇を文献・神話・民族資料・技術的事例から考察した研究書。西村は早稲田大学で日本史や人類学を講じ、歴史学、文化人類学、考古学など幅広い領域を研究した。本書は『A Study of Ancient Ships of Japan』のPart IVにあたり、全体は“The Manashi-Katama or Meshless Basket”“The Kame-no-Se or Turtle Shell”“The Kagami-no-Fune or Wicker Boat”“The Kaniwa-Bune or Birch-Bark Canoe”の4部からなる。1928年から1931年にVols. 5-8として個別に刊行され、本書ではPart IVとして一冊にまとめれている。皮、樹皮、籠組みなどを用いた舟艇を広く“skin-boats”として扱い、『古事記』『日本書紀』『万葉集』に見られる舟の記述を手がかりとし、日本の事例を中国、朝鮮、満洲、モンゴル、シベリア、北米、オセアニアなど各地の舟艇資料と比較しながら考察している。
前見返しには著者による「Presented to Dr. W. J. Perry with the author's compliments.1931.」との献呈文がある。献呈先のDr. W. J. Perryは、ロンドン大学で文化人類学を教えたイギリスの人類学者William James Perry（1877–1949）とみられる。

A study by Shinji Nishimura on ancient Japanese watercraft, forming Part IV of A Study of Ancient Ships of Japan. It brings together Vols. 5–8, originally issued between 1928 and 1931, and examines forms of skin, bark and basket-built watercraft through Japanese textual sources and comparative ethnographic material. The front free endpaper bears a presentation inscription dated 1931, addressed to Dr. W. J. Perry, apparently the British anthropologist William James Perry of University College London.
