日本文学研究者ドナルド・キーンによる、明治維新以降の日本文学を作家と文学運動から考察した文学史。1987年に刊行されたFirst Owl Book Editionのペーパーバック版。
本書は『Dawn to the West: Japanese Literature of the Modern Era』のうちFictionを収めた一巻で、明治初期の啓蒙と翻訳文学から近代小説の成立、戦前・戦中・戦後の文学へと議論を進める。全27章で構成され、坪内逍遥と二葉亭四迷、幸田露伴、樋口一葉、泉鏡花、夏目漱石、森鴎外、永井荷風、芥川龍之介、谷崎潤一郎、川端康成、太宰治、三島由紀夫らを取り上げる。自然主義、白樺派、私小説、プロレタリア文学、モダニズム、転向文学、戦争文学、戦後文学、女性作家の復興といった文学史上の動向にもそれぞれ章が設けられている。巻末には付録、用語集、英訳作品選、索引を収録する。

Donald Keene examines Japanese fiction from the Meiji period through the postwar era, with chapters on writers including Natsume Soseki, Mori Ogai, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Tanizaki Junichiro, Kawabata Yasunari, Dazai Osamu, and Mishima Yukio. The volume comprises twenty-seven chapters and includes an Appendix, Glossary, Selected List of Translations into English, and Index. First Owl Book Edition, 1987.
