本書はハーバード大学フォッグ美術館で行われた講義をもとに構成され、日本の芸術と自然、家庭生活、公家社会、武家社会、町人社会へと論を進める。最終部には当時の変化を扱う「The New Age」を収録する。図版には日本の絵画、建築、庭園、茶室、絵巻、能などが取り上げられ、狩野芳崖、葛飾北斎、歌川広重の作品も収録されている。

Masaharu Anesaki examines Japanese art in relation to life, nature, religion, domestic culture, court culture, warrior culture, and bourgeois life, based on lectures given at the Fogg Museum of Harvard University. The volume includes a frontispiece and numerous illustrations and concludes with a postscript titled "The New Age." First edition, 1933.
