本書では神話に描かれた笑いから出発し、江戸時代の浮世草子や吉原文化、滑稽文学を経て、近代以降のユーモアへと議論を進める。全6章で構成され、西鶴をはじめとする文学作品と視覚表現の双方が取り上げられている。巻末には図版一覧、注、索引を収録する。
ヒベットが長く研究してきた日本文学における笑いとパロディの問題をまとめた晩年の重要な著作。

Howard Hibbett examines the history of Japanese humor through literature, parody, popular culture, and visual material, ranging from early legends to the Edo period and modern Japan. The six chapters include discussions of Ihara Saikaku, Yoshiwara wit, comic literature, and parody, with illustrations throughout and a List of Illustrations, Notes, and Index at the end.
