アメリカの動物学者・日本研究者エドワード・S・モースによる、1877年、1878-79年、1882-83年の日本滞在記録をもとにした著作。初版は1917年にHoughton Mifflinから全2巻で刊行された。本書は1990年刊行復刻版で、全2巻を1冊にまとめた版となる。
本書は滞日期間の日誌をもとに構成され、横浜、東京、日光、江ノ島、蝦夷、函館、長崎、鹿児島、京都など各地での経験を記録する。都市生活、漁村、大学での研究、陶器収集、教育、食事、子ども、遊び、音楽、産業、風俗や習慣などが扱われる。モース自身の日誌中のスケッチをもとにした777点の図版と索引を収録する。

Edward S. Morse records his visits to Japan in 1877, 1878-79 and 1882-83, including observations of Yokohama, Tokyo, Nikko, Enoshima, Yezo, Hakodate, Nagasaki, Kagoshima and Kyoto, as well as education, pottery, customs and everyday life. The work contains 777 illustrations from sketches in the author's journal and includes an index. This copy is the 1990 reprint, combining the original two volumes in one.
