オーストラリア生まれでイギリスを中心に活動した画家モーティマー・メンペスによる、日本の美術と日常生活を文章とカラー図版によって記録した著作。紺色クロス装に菊花文とタイトルを金色で配した出版社オリジナルの装丁を施した1903年刊行リプリント。
本書は全11章で構成され、絵画や演劇に加え、庭園、花、芸者、子ども、職人、町の風景などが取り上げられ、明治期の日本の生活文化が多面的に記録されている。
巻頭の図版一覧には「Miss Pomegranate」「A Street in Kioto」「The Venice of Japan」「A Cloisonne Worker」「Osaka」「Playfellows」「Sundown」など100点が掲げられている。明治期の日本が海外向けの図版本の中でどのように紹介されたかを知る資料としても興味深い一冊。

Mortimer Menpes records aspects of Japanese art and daily life through text and colour illustrations, with the text transcribed by Dorothy Menpes as stated on the title page. The eleven chapters cover art, painting, gardens, flower arrangement, geisha, children, workers, and everyday life, and the List of Illustrations contains 100 entries. January 1903 reprint.
