アメリカの作家・日本研究者であるオリヴァー・スタットラーによる、四国八十八ヶ所の巡礼を自身の経験と歴史資料から記した紀行。初版は1983年にWilliam Morrow and Companyから刊行された。本書はQuillから刊行されたペーパーバック版(推定1985年刊行)。
スタットラーは1960年代から四国遍路への関心を深め、実際に巡礼を行いながら調査を続けた。本書では弘法大師空海、四国遍路の歴史、巡礼に参加する人々を取り上げ、宗教的背景と個人の体験を結びつけながら記述を進めている。「Master」「Savior」「Pilgrims」の三部を中心に構成され、その後に「The Pilgrimage Temples」、Postscript、Indexが収録されている。

Oliver Statler recounts his experiences of the Shikoku Pilgrimage together with its religious and historical background. The book is organized around the sections Master, Savior, and Pilgrims, followed by The Pilgrimage Temples, a Postscript, and an Index, and includes maps, historical woodblock prints, paintings, and other illustrations.
