Edited by Chieko Irie Mulhern, this collection examines eight women from Japanese history and cultural tradition: Empress Jingu, Jito Tenno, Murasaki Shikibu, Tomoe, Hojo Masako, Hani Motoko, Takamine Hideko, and Ariyoshi Sawako. Individual chapters place each figure in her historical and cultural context, and the volume includes a translation of the Noh play Tomoe and an index. First edition, 1991.
