イギリス人聖職者・登山家ウォルター・ウェストンによる、日本アルプスを中心とした登山と旅の記録書。日本の山岳地帯での旅と登山に加えて、土地の生活や習俗、信仰についても記している。1896年刊行初版。
本書は全16章で構成され、巻末には2点の付録と索引を収録する。図版には穂高岳、槍ヶ岳、富士山、御嶽山、温泉、山村、街路などが含まれ、山岳だけでなく当時の日本各地の風景と生活も記録している。

＊現物は本文の大部分が未開封の状態で残っている。数枚の本文ページおよび図版を除き、多くの葉で上端がつながったままとなっており、未開封部分は切り開いていない。ページネーションおよび内容は現状を保つ範囲で可能な限り確認しているが、未開封部分については一葉ずつの完全な確認は行っていない。巻末の2枚の折込地図は開いて確認できる状態だが、その開封経緯は確認できていない。

Walter Weston records his mountaineering and travels in the mountainous regions of central Japan, together with observations on local customs, religious practices, villages, and everyday life. The volume comprises sixteen chapters, two Appendices, an Index, thirty-five illustrations, and two folding maps. This copy is the first edition, published in 1896, and remains largely unopened.

＊The volume is largely unopened. Except for a small number of text leaves and illustrations, many leaves remain joined at the top edge, and the unopened leaves have not been cut. Pagination and contents have been checked as far as possible while preserving the unopened state, but the unopened sections have not been fully inspected leaf by leaf. The two folding maps at the end are present and can be opened for inspection, but the manner in which they were originally folded or opened cannot be confirmed.
