『土曜の夜と日曜の朝』『長距離走者の孤独』で知られるイギリスの作家アラン・シリトーによる初期の詩集。表題作「The Rats」と33篇の詩からなる全34篇で構成される。1960年にW. H. Allenから刊行された初版。
本書収録作のうち10篇は1957年にHoward Sergeant's Outposts Publicationsから『Without Beer or Bread』の題で小冊子として刊行されていた。ほかの作品はOutposts Magazine、The Listener、The New Statesman、Encounter、London Magazineなどに掲載されたことがAcknowledgmentsに記されている。

The Rats and Other Poems by Alan Sillitoe is divided into two parts, "The Rats" and "Other Poems", and contains thirty-four poems in total. "Other Poems" is arranged under Love Poems, Poems on Classical Themes, Lunar Poems, Various Poems, and Autumn and Death Poems, while the acknowledgments state that ten poems had previously appeared in the 1957 booklet Without Beer or Bread. First edition, published in 1960.
