ベルはヴァネッサ・ベルとクライヴ・ベルの息子であり、ヴァージニア・ウルフとレナード・ウルフを叔母・叔父にもつ。本書は自伝として構想されたが、冒頭で本人が述べるように、中心となるのは自分自身ではなく、彼が「elders and betters」と呼ぶ年長者や同時代人たちである。巻末には「A Room of One's Own and Three Guineas」と「Maynard Keynes and His Early Beliefs」の2篇の付録と索引を収録する。ベル自身、クライヴ・ベル、ヴァネッサ・ベル、ダンカン・グラント、ロジャー・フライ、レナード・ウルフ、E. M. フォースター、リットン・ストレイチー、オットリン・モレルらの図版多数収録。
本個体は1995年刊の初版・Special Limited Edition。通常版ダストジャケットの上に、Friends of Charleston向けに制作された追加ダストジャケットを備える二重ジャケット仕様。前見返しにクエンティン・ベルの署名と、追加ダストジャケットのリアフラップにはクエンティン・ベルの娘で、ヴァネッサ・ベルの孫にあたるデザイナー、クレシダ・ベルの署名入り。

Quentin Bell presents personal portraits of family members, friends, artists, and intellectuals associated with Bloomsbury, including Clive and Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, David Garnett, Maynard Keynes, Roger Fry, Leonard Woolf, and Ottoline Morrell. The volume includes sixteen illustrations, two appendices, and an index. First edition, Special Limited Edition, 1995, with two dust jackets; this copy is signed by Quentin Bell and also by Cressida Bell on the rear flap of the additional dust wrapper.
