本書は3部構成である。第1部「A Family Pattern」では異母姉ローラ、異父姉ステラ、実姉ヴァネッサを含むスティーヴン家の家庭環境を扱う。第2部「Virginia Woolf and Childhood」ではウルフ自身の幼少期についての回想や初期作品を取り上げ、第3部「Virginia Woolf and Adolescence」では1897年の日記や青年期の作品、教育をめぐる記述へと議論を進めている。
スティーヴン家を中心とした写真図版多数収録のほか、巻末には注、選択参考文献、索引を収録する。

Louise DeSalvo examines Virginia Woolf's childhood and adolescence through her autobiographical writings, letters, diaries, early fiction, later novels, and nonfiction, with particular attention to family relationships, childhood sexual abuse, and Victorian child-rearing practices. The book is divided into sections on the Stephen family, Woolf's childhood, and her adolescence, and includes photographic illustrations, Notes, Select Bibliography, and Index.
