収録作は『曽根崎心中』『国性爺合戦』『心中天網島』『女殺油地獄』など、近松の代表作を含む。ドナルド・キーンによる序論を収録する。巻末には「A Note on Prostitution in Chikamatsu's Plays」と「Contemporary Puppet Performances of Chikamatsu's Plays」の2篇の付録、参考文献を収める。口絵および各作品に関連する図版も掲載されている。

Eleven plays by Chikamatsu Monzaemon are translated into English by Donald Keene, with a foreword by Wm. Theodore de Bary and an introduction by Keene. The volume includes two appendices, a bibliography, a frontispiece and illustrations relating to the plays. Copyright 1961 Columbia University Press; this copy has the number line "9 8 7 6 5 4," with no separate reprint date stated.
