明治期の作家・翻訳家である二葉亭四迷の『浮雲』を英訳し、その成立と日本近代小説の展開を論じた翻訳・研究書。1967年に初版が刊行され、本書は1971年に刊行された第2刷。Studies of the East Asian Institute, Columbia University および UNESCO Collection of Representative Works, Japanese Series の一冊として刊行された。
前半の Commentary では、二葉亭の生い立ちと教育から始まり、坪内逍遥との関係、『浮雲』の成立、ツルゲーネフ翻訳、二葉亭のリアリズム論へと議論が進められる。後半には Ryan による『浮雲』の英訳を Part One、Part Two、Part Three に分けて収録する。巻末には参考文献と索引を備え、作品本文と成立背景を一冊の中で読むことができる構成となっている。

Marleigh Grayer Ryan presents an English translation of Futabatei Shimei's Ukigumo together with a critical commentary on Futabatei's life, the emergence of the modern Japanese novel, his translations of Turgenev, and his conception of realism. The volume contains four chapters of commentary followed by the three parts of Ukigumo, a Bibliography, and an Index. This copy is the second printing, published in 1971.
