神道研究者である小野祖教による、神社神道の信仰と実践を神、神社、祭祀、社会との関係から解説した研究・入門書。1960年に 『The Kami Way: An Introduction to Shrine Shinto』の題で初出され、1962年に Charles E. Tuttle Company から『Shinto: The Kami Way』として改訂刊行された。本書は1969年の第9刷にあたる。
本書では最初に神、神話、神道の諸形態と組織を扱う。続いて神社と建築、神職、氏子、祭祀へと進み、家庭と神社での礼拝や祭礼について述べる。後半では政府、芸術、経済生活、他宗教、日常習慣との関係を取り上げ、最終章では信仰の継承、神社と自然、世界観、人間観、生と死を扱う。巻末には索引を収録する。写真と多数の線画も備え、神社建築、祭具、祭礼、神職、礼拝などを視覚資料とともに紹介する構成となっている。

Sokyo Ono presents Shinto through discussions of kami, mythology, shrines, worship, festivals, social life, and spiritual characteristics, in collaboration with William P. Woodard and with sketches by Sadao Sakamoto. The volume is arranged in five chapters and includes an Index, fifteen photographs, and numerous drawings. This copy is the ninth printing, published in 1969.
