本書は三部構成で、第1部では初期ユダヤ神秘思想から中世スペイン、ツファット、後代のカバラへと歴史的展開を整理する。神と創造、セフィロト、悪、ルリア派カバラ、人間と魂、贖い、トーラー、実践的カバラといった基本的な主題も扱う。
第2部ではゾーハル、シャブタイ・ツヴィ、ヤコブ・フランク、バヒールの書、手相術、悪魔論、ゲマトリア、ギルグル、ゴーレム、リリス、メルカバー神秘主義などの個別項目を収録する。第3部ではイサク・ルリア、モーセ・コルドヴェロ、クリスティアン・クノル・フォン・ローゼンロートなどを取り上げる。巻末には注、略語一覧、用語集、図版クレジット、一般索引、書名索引を収録する。冒頭には1516年刊のPaulus Riciusによるラテン語版 Porta Lucis のタイトルページを図版として掲載している。
