本書では春日と興福寺を、長い歴史の中で結びついた宗教複合体として扱い、五部から構成される。春日社の成立、興福寺との組織的関係、祭祀、土地と権力、宗教空間を扱い、最後に1868年の神仏分離へと議論を進める。4点の地図、5点の図、3点のダイアグラム、10点の表が記載されている。巻末にはBibliographyとIndexを備える。

A study by Allan G. Grapard of the historical relationship between the Kasuga Shrine and Kofukuji and the combined Shinto-Buddhist religious system that developed around them. The volume follows the Kasuga cult through institutional, ritual and spatial developments to the separation of shrines and temples in 1868, and includes four maps, five figures, three diagrams and ten tables.
