本書は『竹取物語』『伊勢物語』『源氏物語』を中心に、西洋文学の既成概念によってこれらの作品を分類し解釈する方法そのものを問い直している。。『源氏物語』をめぐる章では「女性の手」、私的領域の語り、女性表象、『若紫』の語り、『明石』をめぐるテクスト間の関係などを検討する。巻末には『源氏物語』各巻の付録、注、参考文献、索引を収録する。

Richard Okada examines The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, The Tale of Ise, and The Tale of Genji through questions of language, narrating, gender, and the historical circumstances surrounding the texts. The volume is divided into sections on the Bamboo Cutter, waka and Ise, and Genji, followed by an epilogue, appendix, notes, bibliography, and index. Paperback edition, 1991.
