第1部にはJ. M. Keynesによる序文、David Garnettによる回想「Julian」、ベル自身の「Notes for a Memoir」、書簡、選詩を収録する。書簡には母ヴァネッサ・ベルに宛てた中国滞在中の手紙などが含まれている。第2部にはCharles Mauronによる序文、「On Roger Fry: A Letter」「The Proletariat and Poetry: An Open Letter to C. Day Lewis」を収める。C. Day Lewisによる返答、「War and Peace: Letter to E. M. Forster」、E. M. Forsterによる「Notes for a Reply」が続く。弟クエンティンとの写真、ケンブリッジの友人たちとの写真など図版も多数収録。
詩を書くことと政治的行動の間で揺れたジュリアン・ベルの思想と生涯を知るための非常に重要な1冊。
