第一部には里見自身の自伝を収録する。幼少期の道徳教育、結婚と出産、子どもの死、精神的な危機、神道における修行、霊的体験、禅との出会いを経て「Joy」に至るまでを二十章で綴る。第二部では翻訳者のSallie B. Kingが、戦前期の日本宗教、神・仏・菩薩の観念、誠と心、浄化、女性と宗教、霊的体験、新宗教、浄土教、禅仏教を解説する。各部で注と参考文献を付す。

This spiritual autobiography records Satomi Myōdō's religious journey through Shinto practice, work as a miko, spiritual experiences, and later Zen Buddhist training. Translated and annotated by Sallie B. King, the autobiographical narrative is followed by her commentary on prewar Japanese religion, women and religion, folk belief, Pure Land Buddhism, and Zen Buddhism. First edition, paperback, 1987.
