日本文学研究者であるドナルド・キーンによる、日本の前近代文学と美学を詩歌・散文・演劇から考察した文学案内書。Companions to Asian Studiesシリーズの一冊として1988年に刊行されたペーパーバック版。
本書は1986年から1987年に行われた五つの講演をもとに構成されている。日本の美学、日本の詩歌、詩歌の役割、日本の散文文学、日本の演劇の五章を収める。講演はニューヨーク公共図書館、カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校、メトロポリタン美術館で行われた。巻末には推薦文献と索引を収録する。図版は小野小町を描いた『女房三十六人歌合』の図、俵屋宗達による『伊勢物語』宇津山の場面、Chōjirōによる『源氏物語』玉鬘の場面、河鍋暁斎による歌舞伎『伽羅先代萩』の場面の四点を収める。

The Pleasures of Japanese Literature is based on five lectures and examines Japanese aesthetics, poetry, the uses of poetry, fiction, and theater, with particular attention to premodern literature. It includes four illustrations, suggested reading, and an index. Paperback edition, 1993.
