アメリカの日本文学研究者であるJ. Thomas Rimerによる、古典から現代までの日本文学を個々の作品から紹介した文学案内書。1988年にKodansha Internationalから刊行されたペーパーバック初版。
本書は英訳が刊行されていた日本文学から50作品を選び、古典20作品と近現代30作品に分けて収録する。古典編では『古事記』『万葉集』『古今和歌集』『源氏物語』『方丈記』『徒然草』『平家物語』などを扱う。近現代編では森鴎外、夏目漱石、樋口一葉、芥川龍之介、谷崎潤一郎、川端康成、安部公房、三島由紀夫、大江健三郎らの作品を取り上げる。巻末には追加文献、本書に収録されなかった作品についての章、索引を収録する。

A Reader's Guide to Japanese Literature introduces fifty works available in English translation, divided into twenty classical works and thirty modern works. Each entry provides historical background, a summary of the work, biographical information on the author, and suggestions for reading, with bibliographical information on English translations, further readings, and an index.
